Get out of your head and into your hands.

There’s nothing more satisfying than making something with your hands.

Whether you're making a meal, throwing clay, or working with wood. Taking a 2D piece of cloth and transforming it into a 3D piece of clothing that fits the body feels like magic every time.

Making means putting our phones and laptops down, stepping away from our screens and allowing ourselves to get lost in the process. It can be a very meditative process.

It was during a conversation about the joy of making with Carolyn, the co-founder of the highly regarded haberdashers Merchant & Mills, that sparked the idea of releasing a Paynter sewing pattern, so you too could make your own jacket at home.

Meet Merchant & Mills.

In 2010, husband and wife team Carolyn and Roderick decided they were going to change what a haberdashers could be. Using their experience as designers and photographers they developed their own timeless sewing patterns, and started to stock beautiful fabrics and tools for makers across the world.

Over the last 14 years, their reputation has gone global, and their range of patterns, books, tools, and fabrics are now stocked in stores all over the world, including iconic museums, galleries, and design-led stores.

The Pattern.

Together, we looked through our archive to find a timeless style with lots of interesting details that would look great in a variety of fabrics. The one we all decided on was our Field Jacket.

The Field Jacket.

Since we released it in 2020 and again in 2021, it quickly became part of our everyday uniform. Its timeless design and functionality make it a piece that we turn to day in and day out. And it's a jacket packet full of details, like the hidden side entry pockets, elbow patches, storm shield button placket, and side cinches.

With a few amendments to make it possible to sew at home, the instructions were drawn up, and the pattern was sent to a group of testers. After a year in development, it's finally ready!

Paper and PDF Patterns.

The pattern is now available in two formats: a classic paper pattern and a digital PDF pattern that you can print at home.

What you'll get.

The paper pattern envelope includes: your printed pattern (sizes XS-2XL), written and illustrated instructions, a Paynter neck label, and a limited edition woven label designed by Studio Ludio.

Please note - The labels are included with the physical pattern only. To make the jacket, you will also need fabric, buttons, interfacing and thread. All of which you can find at Merchant & Mills.

Our recommendations.

Skill Level - The pattern is an advanced make. If you haven't sewn before, we'd recommend starting with something easier and working towards this make; it's a style that won't go out of fashion.

Fabric - When it comes to choosing fabric, we recommend light to mid-weight fabrics work best. You could try as light as a 5oz shirting fabric like a poplin or cotton linen blend or a fun seersucker. A reliable classic would be a mid-weight soft cotton twill, and an outerwear version could be made using a waxed fabric if you like working with oilskins. If you're a skilled maker, why not use a contrast thread like the jacket above to show off all of the intricate details?

Usage - This pattern is strictly for personal use only and is not licensed for commercial use so cannot be resold in any way. You are however welcome to make the pattern as a gift for a friend.
